Complete Sandakphu Trek route guide with Map & Landmarks

Sandakphu Trek: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

The clouds are floating beneath your feet, and the tallest mountains in the world greet you at eye level. That’s Sandakphu, a place where the air smells of pine and rhododendrons, and with each step, it feels like a new painting is being unveiled.

It is Bengal's highest point, where you can witness the entire Everest cluster (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu) and the stunning Kanchenjunga family in one sweeping glance. And if you look closely, the white snow-covered peaks appear as a sleeping Buddha, a lovely sight that stays with you long after the trek ends. This trek is more than mountain views. It’s a rare journey to experience two cultures, two cuisines, and the warmth of people from both lands, India and Nepal.

In this post, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know before starting your journey to the Sandakphu trek.

Let’s dive into a detailed day-wise itinerary to help you plan your Sandakphu trek with ease.

Day 1. NJP/ Bagdogra to Manebhanjan- Base Camp & Starting point

The journey begins with a beautiful drive along tea gardens and rolling hills to reach Manebhanjan.

Manebhanjan is a small town from where your actual trek starts. After arriving, get settled and take some rest. In the evening, explore the local areas, have a cup of local chai, and sort out permits for entry to Singalila National Park.

Day 2. Manebhanjan to Tumling-Into the forest

The first-day Sandakphu trek takes you through pine forests, the peaceful Chaitrey monastery, and cute little villages. By evening, you’ll reach Tumling, a hamlet village between India and Nepal. You’ll be walking between two countries.

Stay overnight in a tea house where you’ll witness misty scenery directly through your window.

Day 3. Tumling to Kalipokhri- Trek Between Rhododendrons & Mountain Whispers

This stretch takes you through quiet forests, with prayer flags, and the occasional spot of yaks grazing quietly along the way. You’ll walk into Singalila National Park, and if you are lucky enough, then might hear about red panda sightings. To camp in the park, you have to pay 1,500-5,000 rupees (per person per day), depending on amenities and experiences.

By afternoon, try to reach Kalapokhri, named after the mysterious Blackwater Lake. Stay overnight at any local homestay and enjoy some hot home-cooked meals.

Day 4. Kalipokhri to Sandakphu- The big climb, the big views

This part of the Sandakphu trekking route is the most challenging, but also the most rewarding. You’ll feel your heart beat fast from the hike and the views waiting at the top. When you finally reach Sandakphu, you’ll be standing face to face with an ethereal view of Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu standing together. And then there’s the legendary Sleeping Buddha silhouette.

All this will gently wash away your tiredness and leave you refreshed and alive.

Day 5. Sandakphu to Phalut - A walk towards endless skies

Get up early for Sandakphu sunrise. Then begin your walk along one of the most beautiful ridges in the Himalayas. The trail to Phalut is quiet and feels like you’re walking on the edge of the sky.

Phalut is remote and peaceful. It will take you away from real life, no noise, just mountains, and you.

Day 6. Phalut to Gorkhey- Down to the Valley

Today is the day we begin our descend journey into thick forests, with birds humming, and waterfalls for company. By the late afternoon, you are supposed to reach Gorkhey, a picturesque village along a stream.

Soak your tired feet in the cold water, sip hot tea, and watch the village life go by.

Day 7. Gorkhey to Srikhola to NjP/Bagdogra - Farewell

The final walk ends at Srikhola, another riverside gem.

From here, hop on a shared cab or book a private taxi to reach NJP/Bagdogra with a Camera full of photos and a heart full of memories.

Manebhanjan- Land of Legendary Land Rovers

I couldn’t resist adding a section just for this. Manebhanjan isn’t just the gateway to Sandakphu, it’s a legend on its own. While vintage Land Rovers are rare across the world, this tiny hill town proudly owns over 40, still roaring through the rugged Himalayan trails.

You can hop on one for a ride to remember your lifetime. Just head to the only official booking shop in town. Ask the locals and they will assist you to the shop. Fares vary based on distance, but the thrill? Priceless. Don’t skip this iconic experience.

Trek Guidelines & Tips

1. Fitness Preparation

The Sandakphu West Bengal trek is not like walking in the park. You’ll climb about 12,000 ft, so it’s better to prepare your body a few weeks before. Brisk walking, jogging, and climbing stairs regularly will make your legs thank you later.

2. Permits

You’ll need an entry permit for Singalila National Park. You can easily purchase it from the Visitor Center in Manebhanjan or at the Tumling check post. For verification purposes, they might ask for your passport photo and ID proof.

  • Indian: 120
  • Foreigners: 500
  • Still Camera: 100
  • Video Camera: 400

3. Guide is a Must

You’re required to take a local guide. They enrich the Sandakphu tour & trek with stories and assist you in spotting peaks and wildlife missed on your own. If your backpack feels like you’re carrying bricks, then you can hire porters.

4. Altitude Tips

The stretch from Kalipokhri to Sandakphu hiking is a steep climb, so take it slow and steady. Try to stay hydrated, skip the alcohol, and stay mindful of any signs of altitude sickness, like headaches, dizziness, or nausea. There’s no need to rush, savor every moment as you walk through the serene Sandakphu flora & fauna, and let the journey unfold at its own pace.

5. Network

Buy a local SIM like BSNL/Vi as it works better in higher altitudes. Jio and Airtel might catch a faint signal around Tumling or even at Sandakphu. Several homestays provide Wi-fi facilities for a certain amount (Rs.50-100).

6. Carry Enough Cash

You won’t find any ATMs after Manebhanjan. So, withdraw before heading up for tea, snacks, and homestays need cash.

7. Start Early

Begin your each day trek by 7 or 8 AM to avoid fog and enjoy the most of the clear morning views. Try to reach your next stop, where you will stay for that day, before sunset.

8. Layer Up Wisely

Mountain weather shifts quickly. The mornings might be sunny, but afternoons can turn cold and foggy. So, carry thermals, waterproof jackets, gloves, and woolen clothes.

9. Headlamp

Power cuts are common in these regions, especially at night.
